NEVER AGAIN

too many warm nights without you

full moons, sunsets and summer dew

I rushed to the mailbox and looked inside

an envelope from you, I thought I would die

you drifted away, please say it's not true

how could it end after all we've been through

we kissed good-bye, you said you would write

everyday an empty mailbox, no letters in sight

you had gone to Dallas across the state line

it seems forever since you told me 'you're mine'

a letter arrived I detected your scent

my heart bleeding through an emotional rent

I opened the letter, hands trembling with fear

not even one page, it started with dear

best wishes, take care, that's all you had said

no love you forever, it's over, it's dead

next month was our wedding, the middle of may

It's not what you said, but what you didn't say

blinded by love, never seeing the signs

It's not your words, it's between the lines

whatever you do, don't say good-by

It's much too easy not to try

Throbbing torments ache for you

don't leave me now, don't say we're through

you gave me life then took it back

so long, take care it was just like that

you left with him, the very last straw

my mind in shock, my emotions raw

you disappeared from our little farm town

I heard from another you wore a white gown

exchanging rings and forming a bond

then off to the city and places beyond

five years later we met on the street

'hello how are you', we were very discrete

eyes sad, you fell silent, the world came to a hush

I was nervous and awkward, I said I must rush

'wait don’t go,' you said touching my arm

“I'm sorry, I caused you so much harm”

I stood frozen and quiet, not making a sound

you had left the other and returned to town

my heart was just mending, the break was severe

you said you still loved me, then shed a tear

I couldn't forgive you and try it once more

when I said never, my heart hit the floor

although I still loved you, I held my own ground

my eyes said I adore you, from my lips not a sound

you went off to the city, I remained in town

you were the only love I had ever found
