ODDS ARE THE SAME
fifteen years and married with kids
the last five years have been on the skids
the outside knows we're the perfect couple
the inside knows we're in deep trouble
super mom good dad, nothing but the best
courtship's pretend, and marriage's the test
she goes her way and I go mine
two blinks of an eye, nothing but time
the groom to bastard, the bride to bitch
who's wrong who's right, it doesn't matter which
the house reeks of sadness, there's a mountain of blame
love's dead then indifference, it's always the same
at first it was soccer, little league, boy scouts
then long hours of work, stay away from the house
birthdays, trips, photo ops, say cheese
inside a tornado, outside a breeze
an oscar for her, an oscar for me
price of admission, life is the fee
telling the truth was a thing of the past
how long can we fake it, how long can it last
thinking of freedom and escaping the strife
leaving my kids is like ending my life
you take this and I'll take that
stab if you have to, but not in the back
slice up the savings, you take one half
I'll take chopped liver, I'll take a bath

at three hundred an hour, a lawyerly laugh
they take the meat, I'll take the shaft
starting over at fifty at least
better than being half human half beast
failed times one, try again next game
one half never make it, the odds are the same
